How long does it take to learn English? The hours, and what they mean per day

The most useful answer is in hours, not years. Cambridge English guidance gives about 350–400 hours from zero to B1, 500–600 to B2 and 700–800 to C1. This page turns those hours into months for 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours or 3 hours of study a day, and shows what makes it faster or slower.

The hours come from Cambridge English guidance on guided learning hours: study time with teaching, practice and feedback. The months are simple arithmetic (hours divided by hours per day, with 30.4 days a month), assuming you study every day. If you study five days a week, add about 40%.

Already know some English? Subtract the hours of your current level. For example, if you are B1, B2 needs roughly 150–200 more hours. See the CEFR levels explained to check yours.

What makes it faster or slower

FactorEffect
Your first languageLanguages that share vocabulary or grammar with English (such as Spanish, French or German) are usually quicker than languages far from English.
Hours of real speakingLearners who speak and listen daily progress faster than those who only read and do grammar exercises. Speaking is a skill you build by doing it.
ConsistencyThirty minutes every day usually beats four hours once a week, because memory needs repeated, spaced practice.
ImmersionLiving or working in English adds many hours of listening and speaking you do not count as “study”.
FeedbackA teacher, a partner or an AI tutor that corrects you stops mistakes becoming habits.
Age and previous studyAdults can learn quickly with good methods; earlier learning of any second language also helps.

How long to speak fluently?

“Fluent” has no single definition, so it helps to use levels. A comfortable, spontaneous conversation on everyday topics is usually described at B2, so about 500–600 hours from zero. Speaking can lag behind reading and listening, because it needs practice that studying alone does not give. See how to speak English fluently and how to speak English confidently.

If your goal is a test, ask what score you need first: for example, many universities ask for about IELTS 6.0–6.5, which is around B2. Then plan backwards from the date of the exam.

A realistic plan

  1. Measure your level with the free English level test.
  2. Choose a target and a date, and work out the hours you need from the table.
  3. Make speaking at least a third of your time. Use shadowing, one-minute talks and conversations with an AI tutor.
  4. Track hours, not only lessons. Count listening to podcasts and speaking with friends.
  5. Re-test every month or two and adjust. Not sure what to practise? See how to improve your English speaking skills.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn English?

From zero, Cambridge English guidance gives about 350–400 hours to B1, 500–600 hours to B2 and 700–800 hours to C1. At one hour a day, that is about 12–13 months to B1, 16–20 months to B2 and 23–26 months to C1.

Can I learn English in 3 months?

You can make large progress, and reach a basic A2 level, in three months with daily study. Reaching B2 usually needs 500–600 hours, which in three months would mean about 6–7 hours a day.

How long does it take to speak English fluently?

A spontaneous, comfortable conversation is usually described at B2, so around 500–600 hours from zero. Speaking improves faster when most of your practice is spoken.

How many hours a day should I study English?

Between 30 minutes and 2 hours a day, every day, works well for most adults. Consistency matters more than long sessions. More hours means a shorter calendar time.

How long to go from B1 to B2?

About 150–200 more hours according to the difference between the cumulative Cambridge figures, which is roughly 5–7 months at one hour a day.

Are these numbers exact?

No. They are averages used for planning. Your first language, previous learning, intensity and how much you speak and listen can make your time shorter or longer.
