How to improve English speaking skills: find your weakest area, then fix it
Most advice says “speak more”, which is true but not specific. Speaking is made of different skills: fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, listening and confidence. Your fastest progress comes from finding the one that holds you back. Take the 6-question diagnosis, then use the 10-minute fix for that skill and a simple weekly plan.

A 6-question self-diagnosis
Record yourself answering “Tell me about your last holiday” for one minute, then listen back and answer:
| Question | If the answer is “yes”, your weak area is… |
|---|---|
| Did I stop often, or search for words for a long time? | Fluency |
| Would a stranger find some words hard to understand? | Pronunciation |
| Did I use the same simple words again and again (good, nice, very)? | Vocabulary |
| Did I notice tense, article or plural mistakes? | Grammar |
| Do I often miss what people say, or ask them to repeat? | Listening |
| Do I avoid speaking, or feel nervous even when I know the answer? | Confidence |
Most learners have one or two “yes” answers. Start with those. The free speaking score tool also gives an estimate of your spoken level.

How to measure progress
- Repeat the same test every 4 weeks: the same one-minute topic, recorded. Compare the number of pauses, the clarity and the range of words.
- Count one thing: for example, how many times you stopped for more than 3 seconds. Make it lower each month.
- Check your level with the free level test, and see the CEFR levels for what each level sounds like.
- Track real-life wins: ordering a meal, a meeting, an interview, a phone call.
Habits that slow progress
- Only studying, not speaking. Speaking is a skill that needs speaking practice.
- Practising only what you are good at. It feels better but changes less.
- Trying to fix everything. One error a week is enough.
- No feedback. You can’t hear your own mistakes. Record yourself or use a tutor.
- Waiting to feel ready. Start speaking at your current level.
Frequently asked questions
How can I improve my English speaking skills quickly?
Speak every day, record yourself, find your weakest area (fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, listening or confidence) and spend half your practice time on it, and get regular feedback from a teacher, partner or AI tutor.
How long does it take to improve English speaking?
You can notice better fluency and confidence in a few weeks of daily practice. Moving up a full CEFR level usually takes 150 to 200 more guided hours, depending on your starting point.
What is the best way to practise speaking English alone?
Talk on a random topic for one minute and record it, describe what you see during the day, shadow short audio clips and read aloud. Then listen back and fix one thing.
Should I focus on grammar or speaking?
Speaking needs both, but many learners study grammar and speak too little. Practise grammar through speaking: write correct sentences about your own life and say them aloud.
How do I improve pronunciation and fluency together?
Shadowing is a good way: listen to a short clip and repeat it at the same speed. It trains stress, rhythm and speed together.
Can an AI tutor help me improve speaking?
Yes, an AI tutor gives you unlimited low-pressure practice and feedback on pronunciation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary. It works best together with recording yourself and some real conversations.
