ELSA Speak review: is it free, what it costs, and who it suits
ELSA Speak is one of the best-known pronunciation apps: it listens to you say words and sentences and shows which sounds were wrong. It is free to download with limited lessons, and the full app is paid: ELSA Premium costs ₹499 a month or ₹3,449 a year on the Indian App Store, and $19.99 a month or $99.99 a year in the US, with a 7-day free trial (checked 15 October 2026). It is strongest for pronunciation and accent; for long, free conversation practice, other apps fit better.

What is ELSA Speak?
ELSA stands for English Language Speech Assistant. You read a word or sentence aloud, and the app’s speech recognition marks each sound green, yellow or red, then shows you how to move your mouth and tongue to fix it. That sound-by-sound feedback is what made it popular, especially for learners whose first language has no “th”, “v” or short “i” sound.
The current version goes beyond drills. The listing describes AI conversations and role-plays, a Speech Analyzer for free speaking (it shows pace, hesitation and a grammar score), an Interview Coach, career-specific vocabulary and exam practice, with more than 8,000 lessons in total.
Is ELSA Speak free?
Partly. ELSA is free to download and you can do some lessons and see your pronunciation score without paying. Most of the course, the exam practice and the advanced features need a paid membership. The listing says ELSA Premium “start[s] for free with a 7-day trial”, then renews monthly or yearly unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
Set a reminder on day 5 or 6 if you only want to test it. Several Capterra reviewers say they were charged for a year after the trial and could not get a refund; on an iPhone or Android phone you cancel in your store subscriptions, not inside the app.
ELSA Speak price in India and the US
ELSA in-app prices (App Store, 15 October 2026)
- Premium, 1 month
- ₹499 (India) · $19.99 (US)
- Premium, 3 months
- ₹1,189 (India) · $47.99 (US)
- Premium, 1 year
- ₹3,449 (India) · $99.99 (US)
- ELSA Pro, 3 months (India)
- ₹909
- Other yearly plans listed
- ₹1,749 to ₹5,500 (India) · $71 to $129.99 (US)
The yearly plan is by far the best value: ₹3,449 a year is about ₹287 a month, against ₹499 for a single month. The store lists several yearly prices because ELSA has more than one plan (Pro, Premium and a Professional membership) and runs offers, so the price you see in the app can be lower than the list price. Check what the payment screen says and whether it renews.
What ELSA Speak does well
- Precise pronunciation feedback. Seeing which sound in a word was wrong is far more useful than a single “good / try again”.
- Accent choice. American, British and Australian models, so you can copy the accent you need.
- Short daily sessions. A few minutes a day fits commutes and lunch breaks.
- Work English. Interview, meeting and presentation lessons, and vocabulary by profession.
- Affordable in India on the yearly plan: under ₹300 a month.
Where ELSA Speak falls short
- Drills are not conversations. Repeating sentences well doesn’t train you to find words in real time. Most learners need both.
- Plans are confusing. Pro, Premium and Professional, plus many offers, make the real price hard to compare.
- Renewal complaints. Reviews mention unexpected yearly charges after the trial, so cancel early if unsure.
- Strict scoring can frustrate learners with a clear but non-native accent: being understood matters more than a perfect score.

| How you practise | Repeat words and sentences; AI role-plays | Voice calls with AI tutors in 16 real situations (interviews, meetings, small talk…) |
| Feedback | Score for every sound | Scores for pronunciation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary after each call, every sentence scored word by word, CEFR level |
| Accent | American, British, Australian | American or British tutors |
| Free | Free to download, limited lessons; 7-day Premium trial | 3-day free trial on the yearly plan; no free plan |
| Paid | ₹499/month or ₹3,449/year (India); $19.99 or $99.99 (US) | $14.99/month or $59.99/year (US prices) |
| Where | Android, iPhone | Any browser, on phone or laptop |
A good combination: use a pronunciation app for the two or three sounds that make you hard to understand, and spend most of your speaking time in real conversations. See ELSA Speak vs BoldVoice if you’re choosing between pronunciation apps.

Frequently asked questions

ELSA Speak is free to download and has some free lessons, but most of the course and the advanced features need a paid membership. ELSA Premium has a 7-day free trial, then costs ₹499 a month or ₹3,449 a year in India and $19.99 a month or $99.99 a year in the US (App Store, 15 October 2026).
What is the ELSA Speak price in India?
On the Indian App Store, ELSA Premium costs ₹499 for one month, ₹1,189 for three months and ₹3,449 for one year. ELSA Pro for three months is ₹909, and other yearly plans are listed between ₹1,749 and ₹5,500. Prices checked 15 October 2026; offers in the app can be lower.
Is ELSA Speak worth it?
ELSA Speak is worth it if your main problem is pronunciation: it shows exactly which sounds you got wrong and offers American, British and Australian accents. If your main problem is speaking fluently for a long time, combine it with conversation practice, because repeating sentences does not train you to find words in real time.
Is ELSA Speak good for IELTS speaking?
The listing says ELSA Premium includes exam preparation, and its pronunciation feedback can help the pronunciation part of a speaking score. The exam also scores fluency, vocabulary and grammar in long answers, so practise full answers to real questions as well.
How do I cancel ELSA Speak?
If you subscribed on an iPhone, cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions; on Android, in Google Play → Payments & subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial or the current period ends to avoid the next charge.
