What English speaking apps really cost: one table, checked October 2026
Most apps list several prices for the same plan, which makes them hard to compare. This table shows the lowest and highest in-app prices listed on each app’s US App Store page on 17 October 2026, with the free option and the rating next to them. Yearly plans work out to about $4 to $16 a month, and a tutor lesson costs from about $3 to $120.

“Yearly, per month” is the lowest listed yearly price divided by 12. We make YoFluent, so it is listed first and with our own numbers; the other rows are in the same order every time we update, not ranked by price.
How we collected the prices
- Source: the “In-App Purchases” list on each app’s US App Store page, read on 17 October 2026, and ratings from Apple’s public lookup API on the same day.
- Several prices per plan: apps list old plans, introductory offers and different tiers (for example Speak Premium and Premium Plus, or Langua Pro and Pro Unlimited). We show the lowest and highest listed, and the cheapest tier’s figures where a premium tier exists.
- What differs elsewhere: web and Google Play prices, regional prices, discounts and taxes can be different. Babbel and Pimsleur also sell by language or course.
- What we did not do: we did not test every app, and we did not include apps whose pricing we could not verify.
Human tutors cost per lesson, not per month
| Service | Price (checked 15 October 2026) | Read more |
|---|---|---|
| italki | About $8 to $120 per English lesson, set by each teacher | italki review |
| Preply | About $3 to $40+ per 50-minute English lesson, set by each tutor | Preply review |
| Lingoda | Plans of 4 to 48 classes every 4 weeks; group classes from CHF 6.99 to CHF 14.99 a class (site prices) | Lingoda review |
A tutor can notice things an app misses, but costs more per hour and needs a booked time. Many learners use an app for daily practice and a tutor once a week.
How to choose without overpaying
- Decide what you need first: conversation (AI speaking tutor), pronunciation (coach), habit (lessons) or feedback from a person (tutor). See the best English speaking apps.
- Use the free trial or free minutes to speak for 10 minutes before paying. Free tiers are listed above.
- Compare the yearly per-month price, but only pay yearly once you know you will use it.
- Check the refund rules: App Store purchases often cannot be refunded by the developer.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an English speaking app cost?
On the US App Store in October 2026, monthly plans for English speaking apps mostly cost between about $7 and $30, and yearly plans from about $50 to about $200, depending on the app and plan. Free options are limited to a trial or a few minutes a day.
What is the cheapest English speaking app?
By lowest listed yearly price, Praktika is the cheapest in our table at $49.99 a year, but it also lists plans up to $139.99. Duolingo and Busuu have free versions with limits. Prices change often, so check the checkout screen.
Are AI English tutors cheaper than human tutors?
Per month, yes: an AI speaking app costs about $15 to $30 a month for unlimited practice, while a tutor charges per lesson, from about $3 to $120 depending on the tutor and platform.
Why do apps show different prices for the same plan?
Apps keep older plans, introductory offers and different tiers in their in-app purchase lists, and prices vary by country and platform. This is why we show the lowest and highest listed price.
