Click the button, allow the microphone and speak. You’ll see your input level move, can record five seconds and play it back, and get a clear answer: working, too quiet, or silent. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Test your microphone

Your browser will ask for permission. Choose “Allow”.

Input level

🔒 Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is recorded on our servers or sent anywhere.

What the result means

  • “Your microphone works”: your voice reached a normal speaking level. You’re ready for calls, meetings and voice apps.
  • “It’s very quiet”: sound is coming in, but faintly. Move closer, raise the input volume in your system settings (below), or check that you picked the right microphone.
  • “No sound is coming through”: the browser opened a microphone but it hears silence. It is usually muted (a hardware switch, a key on the keyboard, or a headset mute button), or it’s the wrong device.
  • “Access is blocked”: the browser or your system refused the microphone. See the fixes below.

Microphone blocked in the browser

  • Chrome and Edge: click the icon left of the address (a lock or slider icon), set Microphone to Allow, then reload. Or open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Microphone.
  • Firefox: click the microphone icon in the address bar and remove the block, then reload.
  • Safari (Mac): Safari → Settings → Websites → Microphone, and set this site to Allow.
  • Still blocked? The operating system may be refusing the browser itself. See the next section.

Fix your microphone on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

Windows 10 and 11. Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone: turn on “Microphone access” and “Let desktop apps access your microphone”. Then Settings → System → Sound → Input: choose your microphone and check its volume.

Mac. System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone: turn on your browser. Then System Settings → Sound → Input: pick the microphone and raise the input volume.

iPhone and iPad. Settings → Safari (or Chrome) → Microphone → Allow. If you use an app, check Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.

Android. Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions → Microphone → Allow. In Chrome, also check the site’s settings (the icon next to the address).

“In use by another app”. Some apps hold the microphone (Zoom, Teams, Discord, recording software). Close them, then test again.

Tips to sound clear on calls

  • A headset beats a laptop microphone. Even a cheap wired headset picks up your voice and not the room.
  • Keep the microphone 5–15 cm from your mouth, slightly to the side so your breath doesn’t hit it.
  • Pick a soft room. Curtains, a sofa and a rug reduce echo more than any setting.
  • Don’t whisper. Speech recognition and listeners both understand a normal, steady voice best. This matters for language learners: speaking up makes your pronunciation easier to judge.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my microphone online?

To test a microphone online, open a mic test page, click the test button and allow microphone access. Speak and watch the level bars move, then record a few seconds and play it back. This mic test runs in the browser and uploads nothing.

Why is my microphone not working?

A microphone usually stops working because access is blocked (in the browser or the operating system), it is muted, another app is using it, or the wrong device is selected. Allow access, unmute it, close apps like Zoom or Teams, and choose the right microphone.

Is this mic test safe?

Yes. The YoFluent mic test runs entirely in your browser. The recording stays on your device and disappears when you close the page; nothing is sent to a server.

Why is my microphone so quiet?

A quiet microphone usually has a low input volume in system settings, sits too far from your mouth, or is the built-in laptop microphone instead of your headset. Raise the input level, move closer, and select the right device.

Does the mic test work on a phone?

Yes. The mic test works on iPhone, iPad and Android in Safari or Chrome. Allow microphone access when asked; if you blocked it before, re-enable it in the browser or phone settings.
