What is BoldVoice?

BoldVoice is an accent-training app for non-native English speakers, made by Wellocution Inc. in New York. It was founded in 2021 by Anada Lakra (CEO) and Ilya Usorov (CTO), went through Y Combinator in Summer 2021, and says it has over 5 million downloads.

Its idea is simple: short video lessons from professional accent coaches show you how to make each American English sound, then the app’s AI listens to you and tells you which sounds still need work. BoldVoice names three coaches, Ron Carlos, Eliza Simpson and Nathan Crocker, and describes them as Hollywood dialect coaches who have trained actors for Netflix, HBO and Marvel productions.

It’s used by individuals and sold to companies too, through a BoldVoice for Business plan. BoldVoice also runs free web tools such as the Accent Oracle, which guesses your native language from about 30 seconds of English.

How BoldVoice works

  1. Assessment. When you sign up, it asks for your native language and records a short speech sample. Based on that, it builds a training plan around the sounds people with your background usually struggle with.
  2. Video lessons. A coach explains a sound, shows the mouth and tongue position, and gives examples. Reviewers often single out these positioning tips as the most useful part.
  3. Practice with AI feedback. You repeat words and sentences, and the AI scores how close each sound is to the American model, with tips for the ones you miss. BoldVoice says its AI is trained specifically on accented English.
  4. Daily routine. The plan gives you a short session each day, and you work through sounds, stress and intonation in order.

How much does BoldVoice cost? Is it free?

BoldVoice isn’t free beyond the trial. You get 7 days free with full access, then a subscription starts. On the US App Store, its subscriptions are listed at:

BoldVoice prices (US App Store, re-checked 23 October 2026)

1 month
$14.99 or $24.99
3 months
$89.99
1 year
$99.99, $149.99, $167.99 or $199.99

In India, the App Store lists BoldVoice Premium at ₹7,500 for 12 months, with other plans from ₹750 to ₹9,099 (the listing does not name their length; checked 23 October 2026). Compare all AI speaking and pronunciation apps with Indian prices in the best AI English speaking apps.

Several prices for the same length is normal for subscription apps: the price you see depends on the offer shown in the app, your country and where you buy (App Store, Google Play or the web). Check the price on the screen before you start the trial.

For comparison, ELSA Speak Premium is $19.99 a month on the same store, and a private accent coach typically charges per hour, so a year of BoldVoice costs about the same as a handful of private lessons.

What BoldVoice does well

  • Real coaching, not just a score. The videos explain how to make a sound, which most drill apps never do.
  • Feedback on each sound. You see exactly which part of a word was off, not just a total score.
  • Personalised to your first language. The plan starts from the sounds speakers of your language usually find hard.
  • A clear path. It feels like a course, with an order and a daily goal, which keeps people practising.
  • Strong reputation. 4.8 stars from about 54,000 US App Store ratings, with many reviewers describing more confidence at work.

Where BoldVoice falls short

  • American English only. If you want British English, or you mainly speak with Europeans or Australians, it isn’t built for you.
  • No conversation. You repeat set words and sentences. Sounding right in a drill and in a real conversation are different skills; see how words link in natural speech.
  • Pronunciation only. It doesn’t work on grammar, vocabulary or fluency.
  • Price. Even the cheaper plans cost more than general apps, and the many price points make it hard to know what you’ll pay until you’re in the app.
  • Some AI frustration. A few App Store reviewers say the app keeps flagging a word after they’ve corrected it. That’s a known limit of automatic scoring in general, not only BoldVoice.

What users say

On the US App Store, BoldVoice has 4.8 stars from about 54,000 ratings. Positive reviews mention tongue and mouth positioning, noticeable improvement within weeks, and more confidence in meetings and interviews.

On Trustpilot the picture is mixed, but the sample is small: a TrustScore of 3.7 from 10 reviews. Most are positive about the lessons. The negative ones are mostly about billing: people saying they were charged for a renewal they didn’t expect, and that cancelling was harder than it should be. With so few reviews this isn’t a pattern you can measure, but it’s a good reason to note your renewal date.

So, is BoldVoice worth it?

Yes, if most of these are true for you:

  • You want to sound clearer in American English, usually for work.
  • You already speak English fairly well and your accent is the main thing holding you back.
  • You like structured lessons and will practise 10–15 minutes most days.
  • The price is fine for you, or your employer pays.

Probably not, if:

  • You want British English (try Say It from Oxford University Press).
  • Your bigger problem is speaking fluently: finding words, answering quickly, holding a conversation.
  • You want to try pronunciation training cheaply first (start with the free tools in our pronunciation apps comparison).

How to cancel BoldVoice

Cancel where you subscribed. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.

  • iPhone or iPad: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → BoldVoice → Cancel Subscription.
  • Android: Google Play → your profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → BoldVoice → Cancel.
  • Bought on the website: log in to your BoldVoice account on the web and manage the subscription in your account settings, or contact BoldVoice support.

Do it at least 24 hours before the renewal date, and keep the confirmation email or screenshot.

BoldVoice alternatives

  • ELSA Speak (ELSA vs BoldVoice): also American English with sound-by-sound AI scoring, more drills and exam content, fewer coach videos. Premium $19.99/month.
  • Say It (Oxford University Press): the pick for British English; free version covers all 44 sounds.
  • Speakometer: a cheaper word trainer with both American and British models.
  • Speechling: real human coaches correct your recordings, usually within a day.
  • YoFluent (our app): voice conversations with AI tutors in American or British English, with pronunciation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary scores after each call. Free for 3 days, Pro $14.99/month or $59.99/year. It complements an accent course rather than replacing one.
