Speak app review: is it free, how much it costs, and is it worth it?

Speak is an AI language app built around speaking out loud from the first lesson, with English among its six main courses. It is not really free: there is a free trial, then Speak Premium costs $17.99 a month or $83.99 a year and Premium Plus $39.99 a month or $164.99 a year on the US App Store (checked 15 October 2026). It is a polished, structured course; learners who mostly want open conversation practice or a lower price have alternatives.

What is the Speak app?

Speak (by Speakeasy Labs) is a language app that focuses on speaking rather than tapping answers. The listing describes a four-step method: a short lesson of real-life phrases with a teacher, repeating the new phrases until they come without thinking, feedback from an AI tutor on your pronunciation and grammar, then a conversation that uses what you learned.

It teaches English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese and Korean. The English course is popular in Asia, where Speak first grew, but it works for learners of any first language who can follow its explanations.

Note that “Speak AI” is a different product (a meeting transcription tool); some price comparisons mix the two up.

Is the Speak app free?

No, not beyond the trial. The listing says membership gives “unlimited access to all courses, singles, review material, and other content”, and that it renews monthly or yearly unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the period ends. There is a free trial, and the app shows its length before you start.

If you only want to test it, cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions straight after starting the trial: you keep access until the trial ends.

Speak app price: Premium vs Premium Plus

Speak in-app prices (App Store, 15 October 2026)

Premium, monthly
$17.99 (US) · ₹1,899–₹2,299 (India)
Premium, yearly
$83.99 (US, about $7 a month) · ₹4,999–₹9,900 (India)
Premium Plus, monthly
$39.99 (US) · ₹4,999 (India)
Premium Plus, yearly
$164.99 (US) · ₹9,999–₹22,900 (India)

The yearly plan costs less than five months of the monthly plan, so it only makes sense to pay monthly for a short test. According to Speak’s help center, both tiers include all courses, unlimited Free Talk, situational role-plays, Smart Review and (for English learners) the Pronunciation Coach. Premium Plus adds unlimited “Made For You” lessons (Premium gets up to 3 a day), unlimited Speak Tutor, a personalised study plan and practice that targets your frequent mistakes. You can upgrade later, but not downgrade from Premium Plus. Several prices appear for the same plan because Speak runs offers and older prices stay on the store list.

What Speak does well

  • You speak from day one. Every lesson makes you say things out loud, which is what most apps skip.
  • Clear structure. A course path with review, so you always know what to do next.
  • Polished experience. Its 4.8 rating from tens of thousands of users is hard to argue with.
  • Good value on the yearly plan: about $7 a month in the US.

Where Speak falls short

  • Expensive month to month, and Premium Plus doubles the price.
  • No real free plan: once the trial ends, you pay or stop.
  • Lesson-led. Conversations practise the lesson’s phrases; learners who already speak may want more open, unscripted talk.
  • Phone first. The listing is for the mobile app; there is no full course in a browser.

How much is the Speak app per month?

Is the Speak app worth it?

What is the difference between Speak Premium and Premium Plus?

Both include all Speak courses and unlimited Free Talk. Premium Plus adds unlimited Made For You lessons (Premium has up to 3 a day), unlimited Speak Tutor, a personalised study plan and practice on your frequent mistakes, according to Speak’s help center. It costs about twice as much: $39.99 a month or $164.99 a year in the US, against $17.99 or $83.99 for Premium.

Is Speak good for learning English?

Yes. English is one of Speak’s six main courses, and its focus on speaking from the first lesson suits learners who can read English but freeze when they talk. It has a 4.8 rating from about 64,000 ratings on the US App Store.

How do I cancel Speak?

On an iPhone, go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Speak; on Android, Google Play → Payments & subscriptions. Turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the trial or current period ends.
