Tips to sound confident

  • Don’t memorise word for word. Learn the five parts and one detail for each; it sounds natural, not recited.
  • One specific detail beats a list. “I paint birds” is more memorable than “my hobbies are painting, dancing, singing and reading”.
  • Say your name slowly and pause after it.
  • Smile and look at people, not the floor.
  • Practise out loud three times, recording once. For interviews, also prepare “Tell me about yourself”.

Frequently asked questions

How do I introduce myself as a student?

Greet the audience, say your name and where you are from, say what class or course you study, mention one or two interests with a detail, and end with a goal or a thank you. For example: “Good morning, everyone. My name is Priya, I’m from Jaipur, and I’ve joined the B.Tech computer science course. I love building websites, and this year I want to join the coding club. Thank you.”

How do I give a 1-minute self introduction?

A 1-minute self introduction is about 120 to 150 words. Cover your name and place, your studies, an achievement, a strength, your hobbies and a goal, then thank the audience. Practise with a timer so you finish on time.

Is it correct to say “Myself Priya”?

No. “Myself Priya” is common in India but not standard English. Say “My name is Priya” or “I’m Priya.”

How do I introduce myself on the first day of college?

Say your name and hometown, the course you have joined and why you chose it, one interest outside class, and one thing you want to do this year, such as joining a club. Keep it under a minute and end with “Nice to meet you all.”

What should a child say in a self introduction?

A child can say their name, age, class, who they live with, a favourite colour or game, and what they want to be when they grow up, in short sentences. For example: “My name is Aarav. I am seven years old and I study in class 2. I love cricket. I want to be a pilot. Thank you.”
