AI English tutor: speak English with AI, then see your scores

An AI English tutor is a voice conversation partner that is always available and never judges you. YoFluent, which we make, adds what a chatbot doesn’t: real situations to practise, and a score for your pronunciation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary after every call. Here is exactly how it works, what it costs, and when a human tutor is the better choice.

What an AI English tutor is (and what it isn’t)

An AI English tutor is software you talk to out loud: it listens, understands what you said, answers with a natural voice, and keeps the conversation going. Because it’s available at any hour and doesn’t get tired or impatient, you can speak far more than you could with a weekly lesson.

It isn’t a human teacher. It won’t notice that you look nervous, it can’t design a year-long course around your life, and its corrections are only as good as the rules it was given. A good AI tutor is a practice partner with a scoring system, not a replacement for every kind of teaching.

What a call with an AI tutor looks like

You pick a tutor, a situation and a call length, then talk. The tutor asks one question at a time, reacts to what you say and keeps its own answers short, so you do most of the speaking. This is an example of the start of a job interview call with Sophia, the professional tutor, written for this page:

Sophia
So, tell me a little about yourself.
You
I am working in a bank since three years. I am responsible of the customer accounts.
Sophia
Three years at a bank, that’s solid experience. What does a normal day look like for you?
You
Every morning I check the new requests, and after I call the customers who have problems.
Sophia
And why do you want to leave the bank now?

The tutor doesn’t stop the conversation to correct you, because that would stop you speaking. Instead, small chips under each of your lines show the suggested fix and how each word sounded, and the report after the call lists every correction with a reason:

You saidA native speaker would sayWhy
I am working in a bank since three years.I’ve been working at a bank for three years.For something that started in the past and is still true, use the present perfect, with “for” + a length of time.
I am responsible of the customer accounts.I’m responsible for customer accounts.“Responsible” takes “for”.
…and after I call the customers……and then I call the customers…Use “then” or “after that” for the next step; “after” needs something after it (“after lunch”).

What you’re scored on, and how

After every call you get an overall score out of 100 and an estimated CEFR level. The skills are measured in two different ways: what you sound like is measured from your voice, and what you said is reviewed from the words.

SkillHow it’s measuredWhat you see
PronunciationFrom your voice, sound by sound (Microsoft Azure AI Speech pronunciation assessment)Each sentence scored, with the words to work on highlighted
FluencyFrom your voice: speed, pauses, and how much you say in each answerA fluency score; short answers lower it
IntonationFrom your voice: the rise and fall of your sentencesAn intonation score
GrammarReviewed by AI from what you saidEach mistake, the corrected sentence and a one-line reason
VocabularyReviewed by AI from what you said: range and precisionA score, plus your sentences rewritten the way a native speaker would say them

The full method, including how the scores map to CEFR levels and IELTS bands, is in how your English speaking score is calculated.

Four tutors, with an American or British accent

Each tutor has a different personality, and each one can speak with an American or a British English voice. Choose the accent you hear most, or the one you want to sound like.

AI tutor app vs ChatGPT vs a human tutor

All three can help you speak better. They differ in cost, how much you can practise, and the feedback you get.

Who an AI English tutor is (and isn’t) for

It works best if you:

  • understand English but freeze or slow down when you have to speak;
  • are preparing for something specific: an interview, a move abroad, IELTS speaking;
  • feel shy speaking with people and want to practise without being judged;
  • want to see your progress in numbers, not just feel it.

Choose something else if you:

  • are a complete beginner (A0–A1): a structured course or a human teacher will build the basics faster;
  • need a certificate or a personal exam strategy: a qualified teacher is worth the price;
  • want to make friends who speak English: a language exchange app like HelloTalk or Tandem is free.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI English tutor?

Yes, with limits. ChatGPT and Gemini have free voice modes you can practise with, but they don’t score your speaking. YoFluent gives a 3-day free trial of unlimited calls with scores after every call, then costs $14.99 a month or $59.99 a year (US prices).

Can an AI tutor really improve my English speaking?

Yes, mainly because it lets you speak much more often: speaking practice is what builds fluency, and an AI tutor is available whenever you have 10 minutes. It improves faster when the tutor gives you specific corrections and you work on one weak skill at a time.

Is an AI English tutor better than ChatGPT for practising speaking?

For casual conversation, ChatGPT voice mode is a good free option. An AI tutor app like YoFluent adds built-in situations, pronunciation scored from your voice instead of from text, and a report with your mistakes and level after every call.

Can I practise with an American or British accent?

Yes. Each of YoFluent’s four AI tutors (Mia, Oliver, Sophia and Leo) can speak with an American or a British English voice, and you choose before the call.

What level of English do I need to use an AI English tutor?

YoFluent works from beginner to advanced: the tutors adapt their vocabulary and pace to your level. Complete beginners usually get more from a structured course first, then use an AI tutor once they can say simple sentences.

Does the AI English tutor work on my phone?

Yes. YoFluent works in the browser on any phone or computer with a microphone, with nothing to install.
