AI language learning apps: the four types, and how to choose one

Most “best AI language apps” lists rank apps against each other, and they disagree. A better question is which type of AI app matches your problem. There are four: lesson apps that added AI, scripted speaking courses, open AI conversation tutors, and pronunciation coaches. Pick the type first, then compare prices.

Lesson apps that added AI

Big course apps now add AI on top of their lessons. Duolingo’s Video Call, for example, lets you talk with its character Lily, and Duolingo announced it as a feature for Duolingo Max subscribers. Babbel has an AI conversation feature in its mobile app, which Babbel’s help centre describes as beta. These help most when you already enjoy the course and want a little speaking practice, but the AI is an extra, not the product.

Scripted speaking courses

These guide you through planned speaking exercises. They are a good first step if you are anxious, because you always know what comes next. The limit is variety: after a few weeks the scenarios can feel predictable. If you are a beginner, start here; if you are intermediate, move to open conversation.

Open AI conversation tutors

You talk about anything, by voice, and the AI replies and corrects you. This is the closest thing to the real world for the price, and the only type where the amount of practice is limited by your time, not a lesson count. What separates apps in this group is feedback: does it only keep the conversation going, or does it score your pronunciation, grammar and fluency so you can see progress?

YoFluent is in this group: voice calls with AI tutors in real situations, with scores after every call. We made it, so use our reviews of the others to compare fairly: all prices in one table, or 13 AI English speaking apps compared.

Pronunciation coaches

If your vocabulary is fine but people ask you to repeat yourself, a pronunciation coach is the right tool. They listen to short phrases and show you which sounds to fix. Our pronunciation app comparison covers them, and the free guides on word stress and linking sounds help without any app.

Five questions before you pay

  1. Is there a real free option or trial? Test for a week.
  2. What does it cost after the offer? Compare the yearly price per month.
  3. Does it cover your language and level? Many AI features start with a few languages.
  4. What feedback do you get? A score and examples beat “great job!”.
  5. Will you actually use it? The best app is the one you open every day.

What AI cannot do yet

AI tutors do not replace every kind of practice. They may miss a subtle error or let a wrong answer pass, and they cannot give you the social pressure of a real person. Use AI for volume and a human tutor, such as on italki, Preply or Cambly, for the occasional reality check.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI language learning app?

It depends on the type you need: a lesson app for vocabulary, a scripted course for beginners, an open conversation tutor for real practice, or a pronunciation coach for accent. Rankings disagree, so choose the type first.

Can AI replace a language teacher?

Not entirely. AI gives unlimited low-pressure practice, while a human tutor catches subtle errors and gives real-world feedback. Many learners use both.

Are AI language apps free?

Most have a free tier or trial with limits, and a paid plan for full use. Check the renewal price before you subscribe.

Is it OK to use ChatGPT to practise a language?

It can work for conversation, but general assistants are not built to score your pronunciation or track progress, so many learners use a dedicated app alongside.
