Talkpal review: AI conversation in 130+ languages, the free plan and what Premium costs

What is Talkpal?

Talkpal is an AI language tutor. You hold conversations by voice or text with an AI that adapts its difficulty, and get feedback on your mistakes. Its listing says the app covers more than 130 languages and that it has more than five million learners. It also has role-play and debate modes, which Talkpal links from its site.

Is Talkpal free?

Partly. The free Basic plan allows 10 minutes of practice a day, with basic chat, a pronunciation assessment tool and progress tracking. Premium removes the daily limit and adds daily AI feedback. Talkpal’s site shows a 14-day free trial on the Premium plans with “no payment today”, and says you can cancel at any time. It does not show the Premium price on the page we read, and notes that prices vary by location. On the US App Store the listed prices are $19.99 for a month, $49.99 for three months and $119.99 for a year.

What Talkpal does well

• Very wide language choice: useful if you study more than one language or one that big apps ignore.
• A real free plan with 10 minutes a day.
• Voice and chat modes, so you can start with typing and move to speaking.
• Reasonable yearly price compared with some AI tutors.

Where Talkpal falls short

• A general language app. It is not built around English-specific goals such as interviews, workplace English or speaking exams.
• Conversation depends on a general AI. Feedback is as good as the model’s corrections, which can vary.
• Prices are not shown clearly on the site, and they differ between the site and the App Store.
• Fewer ratings (about 3,900 on iOS) than the big apps, so less independent feedback.
