English tutor online: AI vs human tutor, what they cost, and which to choose
An online English tutor can be a person on video or an AI you talk to by voice. Human tutors cost from about $3 to $120 a lesson and can diagnose problems an app misses. AI tutors cost about $4 to $16 a month and give you far more speaking time, at any hour. Here are the checked prices, the cost per speaking minute with the maths shown, who each suits, and a simple plan that uses both.

What online English tutors cost (checked prices)
| Service | Price | Four lessons a month |
|---|---|---|
| Preply | $3 to $40+ per 50-minute lesson | $12 to $160 |
| italki | $8 to $120 per lesson | $32 to $480 |
| Cambly | Plans from $12 a month (small groups); $30 private lessons with recordings; $45 Pro tutors | $12 to $45 |
| AI conversation app, yearly plan | About $4 to $16 a month, unlimited practice | $4 to $16 |
Sources: our reviews of Preply, italki and Cambly, checked 15 to 20 October 2026, and app prices from our price table. Cambly sells subscriptions rather than single lessons, so its last column shows plan price, not four lessons. Group-class services such as Lingoda price per class instead. Tutor prices are set by each tutor and change, so check the platform before you book.
The cost per speaking minute: the maths
A lesson price hides how much you speak. A rough comparison, with the assumptions stated so you can change them:
| Option | Cost | Your speaking time | Rough cost per speaking minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human tutor, mid-price | $20 for a 50-minute lesson | About 25 minutes (the tutor talks too) | about $0.80 |
| Human tutor, low price | $5 for a 50-minute lesson | About 25 minutes | about $0.20 |
| AI tutor, yearly plan | $5.00 a month ($59.99 a year) | 10 minutes a day = 300 minutes a month | about $0.02 |
These are illustrations, not measurements: in real lessons the split between tutor and learner varies, and AI plans may have limits. The point is the scale: AI practice costs a few cents per speaking minute, a tutor lesson tens of cents to dollars. But a tutor is not selling minutes; they are selling expert feedback, which is worth paying for in the right place.
AI tutor vs human tutor: what each does better
| Human tutor | AI tutor | |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking volume | Limited by lesson length and budget | As much as you want, any hour |
| Feedback quality | Can notice subtle errors, explain why, adapt to your goals | Instant and consistent, but can miss subtle problems or make mistakes; check corrections you doubt |
| Pronunciation | Can hear and explain your specific problem sounds | Scores sounds per word in the better apps; no explanation of your mouth shape |
| Nerves | Some learners feel judged | No judgement; good for starting to speak |
| Exam or interview prep | Can coach strategy and give a realistic mock | Good for repeated practice of questions; less coaching on strategy |
| Motivation | A fixed booking creates accountability | Needs self-discipline |
| Cost | About $3 to $120 per lesson | About $4 to $16 a month (yearly plans) |
| Scheduling | Book and cancel by time zone | Anytime |
Which should you choose?
| If you… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze when you speak | AI first | Low-pressure volume builds confidence |
| Have an exam or interview date | Human tutor (plus AI for drills) | Strategy and realistic feedback matter |
| Have a small budget | AI app, then a few low-price tutor trials | Most speaking per dollar |
| Need accountability | A booked weekly lesson | A fixed time keeps you going |
| Have one stubborn pronunciation problem | Human tutor, one or two lessons | A person can diagnose it |
| Are a beginner | Human tutor or structured course with explanations in your language, plus AI | Beginners benefit from explanation; AI errors are harder to spot |
A plan that uses both (about $25–60 a month)
- Daily, 10–15 minutes: speak with an AI tutor about real situations. Note three phrases you got wrong.
- Weekly or fortnightly, one lesson: take those notes to a human tutor. Ask them to fix your three biggest recurring errors.
- Each month: record a 2-minute answer and compare it with last month, or check your level with the free speaking score tool.
This keeps tutor time for what a person does best and uses cheap AI practice for volume. Read more about the AI side in our guide to practising with an AI English tutor, and compare apps in the best English speaking apps.
How to choose a human tutor without wasting money
- Book a trial first. Services list trial prices; compare two or three tutors before a package.
- Bring a goal. “Fix my interview answers” beats “improve my English”.
- Check the lesson length (30, 45 or 50 minutes) when you compare prices.
- Ask how lessons are structured and what feedback you get after each one.
- Look at cancellation and refund terms before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an online English tutor cost?
On the platforms we checked in October 2026, Preply lessons run from about $3 to $40 or more for 50 minutes, and italki lessons from about $8 to $120. Cambly sells subscriptions from about $12 a month for small groups, $30 for private lessons and $45 for Pro tutors. Prices are set by each tutor and change.
Is an AI English tutor better than a human tutor?
They are good at different things. An AI tutor gives much more speaking practice per dollar, at any hour and without judgement. A human tutor is better at diagnosing subtle problems, coaching for exams and interviews, and keeping you accountable. Many learners use both.
Can AI replace an English tutor?
For daily speaking practice, often yes. For expert diagnosis, exam strategy and personal accountability, a good human tutor still adds value. AI can also make mistakes, so check corrections you are unsure about.
How often should I have lessons with an English tutor?
Once a week is a common rhythm, once a fortnight if you practise daily with an AI or partner in between. More important than frequency is bringing a clear goal and practising what you learned.
Where can I find an English tutor online?
Marketplaces such as Preply and italki let you choose a tutor by price, and Cambly offers on-demand lessons with native English speakers. Read our reviews of Preply, italki and Cambly, and always book a trial lesson first.
Is it worth paying for an English tutor?
It is worth it when you have a specific goal, such as an interview, an exam or a pronunciation problem, and you bring your practice notes to the lesson. If you mainly need more speaking time, a cheaper AI tutor gives more minutes.
What is the cheapest way to practise English with a tutor?
An AI tutor on a yearly plan costs about $4 to $16 a month for unlimited practice. For human lessons, low-price tutors on marketplaces start at a few dollars per lesson; use a trial to check quality.
