Online English speaking course: free or paid, and how to choose the right one

There are four kinds of online English speaking course: live classes with a teacher, self-paced app courses, free MOOCs, and AI conversation practice. They solve different problems, and the price says little about how much you will actually speak. Here is how each works, what to ask before you pay, a simple way to calculate your real speaking time per class, and a free 90-day plan if you want to start today.

The 4 kinds of online English speaking course

KindWhat you getWeak pointAsk before you pay
Live class (group or 1-to-1)A teacher, a schedule, real-time correction and other learnersGroup batches mean little speaking time each; price and quality vary a lotBatch size, minutes you speak per class, demo class, total fee with GST, refund terms
Self-paced app courseDaily lessons, exercises and an AI or recorded teacher; often explanations in your languageEasy to quit; speaking is mostly scripted; a human coach is usually an add-onFree trial or demo, what the yearly price includes, auto-renewal, cancellation steps
Free MOOCVideo lessons and quizzes from a university or platform, at no costMostly listening and reading; little or no speaking feedbackWhether there is any speaking task, and whether a certificate costs extra
AI conversation practiceUnlimited spoken conversations with an AI tutor, at any hour, with scores or correctionsNo fixed syllabus; needs self-discipline; AI is more patient than a real personWhat the free limit is, whether you get scores, how it handles your accent

The speaking-minutes test: what a class really gives you

A course page tells you hours of lessons. What matters for speaking is how many minutes you talk. A quick example, using round numbers:

FormatClass lengthLearnersYour speaking time (if shared equally)
Group class60 minutes30about 2 minutes
Small group60 minutes6about 10 minutes
1-to-1 lesson60 minutes1up to 30–40 minutes (the teacher also talks)
AI conversation10 minutes110 minutes, any time

These are illustrations, not data about any provider. In real classes the teacher talks too, so your share is lower. Ask any course how many minutes a learner speaks per week; if they cannot answer, that tells you something.

Free online English speaking courses and tools

  • SWAYAM. The Indian government’s free MOOC portal for college-level learners, launched in 2017 by the Ministry of Education and AICTE. Access is free; check swayam.gov.in for the English and communication courses currently offered and for certificate exam details. It teaches through video and quizzes, so add speaking practice yourself.
  • Free app tiers. Several apps let you start free. We list what each free version really includes in free spoken English apps.
  • Free AI voice chat. ChatGPT voice mode and Gemini Live give free conversation with daily limits. Ask them to correct one mistake at a time. See the prompts in our English speaking practice plan.
  • Language-exchange apps such as HelloTalk and Tandem for real conversation partners.

“Free certificate” offers deserve a second look: a certificate does not prove you can speak, and employers and interviewers test your speaking, not your paper.

10 questions to ask before you pay for any course

  1. What is the total price, including GST and any extra fees?
  2. How many minutes will I speak each week?
  3. What is the batch size? (Live classes.)
  4. Can I try a demo class or a free trial first?
  5. Who gives feedback: a teacher, a coach, or only an app?
  6. Is the refund policy in writing, and what are the conditions?
  7. Does it auto-renew? How do I cancel?
  8. What level is it for? A beginner course wastes an intermediate learner’s time, and the reverse.
  9. What happens after the course ends? Do I keep access to the lessons?
  10. Does it promise fluency in a fixed number of days? If yes, treat it as a warning sign.

A free 90-day speaking plan (if you want to start today)

DaysGoalDaily routine (about 20 minutes)
1–30Speak without freezing10 minutes talking to a free AI in voice mode, 5 minutes shadowing a short clip (shadowing English), 5 minutes learning sentences from daily English sentences.
31–60Speak for a minuteOne 1-minute talk a day from just a minute topics, recorded and replayed; plus a weekly conversation with a partner.
61–90Real situationsPractise interviews, meetings and phone calls (tell me about yourself, English phone calls), and check your level with the free speaking score tool.

When is a paid course worth it?

  • You need accountability. A fixed class time keeps some learners going when free apps do not.
  • You are a beginner and want explanations in your own language. Some app courses explain in Hindi and other Indian languages.
  • You need human correction for a specific goal such as an interview or an exam.
  • It is not worth it if you mainly need more speaking volume: free or AI practice gives far more minutes per rupee.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free online English speaking course?

Yes, in several forms: SWAYAM, the Indian government’s free MOOC platform (check swayam.gov.in for the current English courses), free tiers of speaking apps, and free AI voice chat with daily limits. Free MOOCs mostly teach by video and quizzes, so add your own speaking practice.

Which online English speaking course is best for beginners?

Beginners usually do best with a structured daily course that explains in their own language, such as a self-paced app course, plus a few minutes of speaking every day. Compare total price, human support, demo or trial, and refund terms before paying.

How much does an online spoken English course cost in India?

It varies widely. As one example, Supernova AI’s one-year adults course is ₹8,999 + GST (about ₹10,619 with 18% GST) on its official pricing page, checked 26 October 2026. Always ask for the total price including GST and any extra fees.

Can I learn to speak English online without a teacher?

Yes, many people improve with daily speaking practice using AI tutors, shadowing and recording, plus occasional conversations with real people. A teacher helps most with targeted feedback for exams or interviews.

How long does a spoken English course take?

Courses run from a few weeks to a year, but your progress depends on how much you speak each week. Daily practice of 20 to 30 minutes usually shows clear improvement within a few months.

Is an English speaking course certificate useful?

A certificate shows you finished a course, but it does not prove you can speak. Interviews and exams test your actual speaking, so practise speaking whether or not the course gives a certificate.

Online English speaking class or spoken English class near me?

Online classes are easier to fit into a schedule and give a wider choice of teachers. A local class gives face-to-face practice. Whichever you pick, ask how many minutes you will speak per week.
